Cheese Twisted Bread

Cheese Twisted Bread

Prep time: 30 mins (+2 hours rising) | Bake time: 20-25 mins | Yield: 2 twisted loaves

Ingredients

The Dough:

  • 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk

  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tsp instant yeast

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 egg (room temperature)

The Filling:

  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheese (Mozzarella, Cheddar, or Feta)

  • 2 tbsp butter, softened

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley or green onions, finely chopped

  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it stand for 5 minutes until frothy. Add the egg, melted butter, salt, and flour.

  2. Knead: Knead by hand or with a mixer for 8–10 minutes until the dough is smooth and tacky. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1.5 hours until doubled.

  3. Fill and Shape: Punch down the dough and divide into two. Roll each piece into a large rectangle. Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle generously with cheese and herbs.

  4. The Twist: Roll the dough tightly into a log (like a cinnamon roll). Use a knife to slice the log lengthwise down the middle, leaving one end attached. Twist the two strands over each other, keeping the “cut” side (where the cheese is visible) facing upward.

  5. Second Rise: Place the twisted loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the tops with egg wash for a glossy finish. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
